Produced water discharged to the sea from petroleum operations on the Norwegian continental shelf contains varying amounts of naturally occurring radioactive materials (Norm).
A new report concludes that these discharges do not increase the level of radioactivity in either water or sediments in the North Sea. Nor is it measurable in ecosystems.
The authors of the report accordingly conclude that it is improbable that the discharges have any impact on marine organisms.
