Plans originally called for the negotiations to begin in late April and continue during May. But this schedule was postponed until the autumn because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The parties in the lead sector, which covers industries exposed to foreign competition, reached agreement in August after mediation which went into extra time.
This settlement includes agreement on an overall economic framework with annual pay growth of 1.7 per cent for 2020. That comprises last year’s pay carry-over, the effects of the central pay settlement and calculations on pay drift – in other words, the probable outcome of local pay negotiations.
Subsequent settlements will pay regard to the framework provided by the lead sector.
